O Children |

Line-up: Tobias O'Kandi - Vocals Gauthier Ajarrista - Guitar Harry James - Bass Andi Sleath - Drums "Undoubtedly influenced and buoyed by The Horrors' recent upsurge in critical acclaim, O Children have raised their game somewhat from the cabaret goth outfit that 12 months ago raised the odd cackle and naughty wink courtesy of 'Ace Breasts', 'Pig Knees' and other assorted aptly monikered gems. That the majority of their earlier compositions aren't included on O Children suggests the London four-piece have made a conscious effort to take themselves and be taken far more seriously. Although the reference points are obvious - Bauhaus, Joy Division, The Chameleons, errr... White Lies - they do at least exude an innocent charm throughout the deathly bass-heavy rumble and O'Kandi's devilish baritone. "

¾ 2010: O Children Tracklisting: 1. Malo 2. Dead Disco Dancer 3. Heels 4. Fault Line 5. Smile 6. Ezekiel's Son 7. Ruins 8. Radio Waves 9. Pray The Soul Away 10. Don't Dig 11. Lily's Man (Bonus Track) "The London-based outfit are named after a Nick Cave track but share genes with a more anthemic lineage than that, as anyone even passingly familiar with the work of Interpol and Editors will attest. You couldnt spell em out quicker with an Ouija board. But rather than take themselves too seriously (frontman Tobi OKandi and drummer Andi Sleath are formerly of rock-god scourges Bono Must Die), O Children wed sly humour and stroppy conviction in a way thats just as indebted to the big music sweep of early Tears For Fears as it is Bauhaus. Dead Disco Dancer does by way of Arcade Fires Intervention, while Ruins is flat-out sexy and sounds like The Killing Moon [Echo & the Bunnymen] with vocals stuck on half-speed and phasers set to glum. Even the more generic moments are rendered as suave as Draculas underpants by OKandis necrotic baritone croon, confirming O Children as the best source of good, unclean fun this side of a weekends watersporting with Xtina.
